Homemade play dough is fun for all kids, even us big kids, and it is so easy to make. This recipe makes enough for three small balls of dough so you may want to double or even quadruple it depending on how many kids you are making for. Sometimes I make this on my own the night before and sometimes I get the kids involved; depends on how tidy my kitchen is before I start.
To Make Play Dough You Will Need:
- 2 cups of plain flour.
- 3/4 cup salt.
- 4 teaspoons cream of tartar.
- 2 cups lukewarm water.
- 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
- Food colouring
How to Make Homemade Play Dough:
I use lukewarm water in this recipe to save me from making it in a saucepan.
- Mix all the dry ingredients: flour, salt and cream of tartar
- Add the lukewarm water and mix well
- Add the vegetable oil and mix well
- Add the food colouring
If you are making a number of colours separate your dough into balls after step 3.
You will need to knead the dough well before using it. The play dough can be stored by wrapping it in greaseproof paper and placing it in a ziplock bag or box. It will eventually go hard though so needs replaced after a number of uses.
We used this dough in our colours unit study to demonstrate colour mixing. Why not try adding some glitter, essential oils or other sensory items to your dough. We did that in our space unit study for sensory play. Let me know if you give it a go.
